Create Desert Wight

Level: 8

School: Necromancy

Range: Touch

Duration: Permanent

Area of Effect: 1 living human

Components: V, S, M

Casting Time: 6 days

Saving Throw: Special

Description: This spell is centuries, if not millennia old and duplicates the sorcery which created the desert wights by accident.  To cast this spell the caster needs on specific material component: the victim to be transformed into a desert wight.  This victim must be human and can be of any age, and must be restrained for the entire duration of the spell.  The ritual costs 750gp in unguents, incenses and liniments and requires 6 days of continuous effort – meaning that the caster is not permitted to sleep or eat during the ritual and because of this the spell is rarely cast successfully by casters who are not themselves already undead.

When the ritual is completed the victim is entitled to a standard saving throw versus death magic.  If they fail that save they die instantly and become a desert wight with standard stats and abilities.  If they pass that save all they have done is delayed the inevitable; they will remain alive for one day for every point of constitution they have and at the end of the last day they will die and become a desert wight with standard stats and abilities.  Only restorative magic of power equal to a full Restoration can halt the magic.  If the victim dies after being affected by this spell but before transforming into a desert wight then upon death the spell takes full effect as if the original save had been failed.  The transformation itself is alarming in its rapidity; the victim’s skin will shrivel, their eyes and hair fall out and their organs mummify in mere seconds.

Note that this spell does not confer the ability to control a desert wight once created.  Other magic or the power of an evil priest is required for that.

(This spell was developed for the world of Saas)
